About Sri Lanka

Overview

Sri Lanka is an island nation situated in the Indian Ocean, just off the southeastern tip of the Indian subcontinent, separated from India by the Palk Strait. Known for its ancient Buddhist temples, colonial-era spice trade heritage, and prolific tea plantations, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka draws researchers, travelers, and historians in equal measure. With a population of around 21.4 million and an area of 65,610 km², this compact island packs remarkable geographic and cultural diversity into a relatively small space.

Geography

Sri Lanka's central highlands form the backbone of the island, with Pidurutalagala rising to roughly 2,524 meters as the highest peak. The hill country gives way to broad coastal plains on the north and east, and to densely forested lowlands in the southwest. The island has two major climate zones driven by two monsoon seasons: the southwestern wet zone receives heavy rainfall from May through August, while the northern and eastern dry zone benefits from the northeast monsoon between October and January. Major rivers include the Mahaweli Ganga, the longest on the island, which flows northeast and supports extensive irrigation networks. Coastlines span the Bay of Bengal to the east and the Laccadive Sea to the west, offering both shallow lagoons and open-ocean shorelines.

Demographics

The island's population of approximately 21.4 million is unevenly distributed, with the highest densities clustered around the Western Province, including the capital Colombo. The Sinhalese majority accounts for roughly 75 percent of the population, while Sri Lankan Tamils and Indian Tamils together constitute around 15 percent. Sri Lankan Moors, descendants of Arab traders, represent approximately 9 percent. Sinhala and Tamil are both official languages. Buddhism is the dominant religion among the Sinhalese, while Hinduism is predominant among Tamils; Christianity and Islam are practiced by significant minorities. Urbanization is growing but the majority of Sri Lankans still live in rural or semi-rural settings.

Culture & Language

Sinhala and Tamil shape daily life, literature, and public signage across the island. The two languages have distinct scripts and rich classical traditions. Sri Lankan cuisine centers on rice and coconut-based curries, with fish, lentils, and an array of spices — particularly cinnamon, pepper, and cardamom — playing central roles. The country is one of the world's leading producers of cinnamon. Cricket is the dominant sport, with the national team having won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1996. Traditional performing arts include Kandyan dance, characterized by elaborate costumes and drumming, and kolam masked dance-drama. Buddhist festivals such as the Esala Perahera procession in Kandy draw large crowds each year.

Government & Politics

Sri Lanka is a democratic socialist republic with a semi-presidential system. The country gained independence from British rule on 4 February 1948, and became a republic in 1972. The executive president serves as head of state and head of government, elected by popular vote for a five-year term. A prime minister heads the cabinet and manages parliamentary affairs. The legislature is a unicameral Parliament seated in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the legislative capital, while Colombo functions as the commercial capital and seat of most executive administration. The country has navigated significant political transitions in recent years, including economic and governance crises that led to constitutional changes around 2022.

Economy

Sri Lanka's economy is classified as a lower-middle-income economy, with a GDP estimated at around 85–90 billion USD in recent years before the 2022 economic crisis substantially contracted output. GDP per capita stands at roughly 3,500–4,000 USD, though recovery efforts have been ongoing. Key industries include tea production — Sri Lanka is among the world's top tea exporters — as well as garments and textiles, rubber, coconut products, and tourism. Remittances from Sri Lankans working abroad form a significant portion of foreign exchange earnings. The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Imports include petroleum, machinery, vehicles, and food commodities. The country has been working with the International Monetary Fund on a structural adjustment and debt restructuring program since 2023.

Infrastructure & Development

Internet penetration in Sri Lanka has grown steadily, reaching an estimated 50–60 percent of the population, with mobile broadband being the primary access method for most users. The road network is reasonably well developed by regional standards, and a rail network connects Colombo to Kandy, Jaffna, Galle, and other major towns, including the scenic hill-country line regarded as one of the more picturesque rail routes in Asia. Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo handles the majority of international air traffic, with a secondary airport at Mattala. The education system is publicly funded through the university level, and literacy rates are among the highest in South Asia at around 92 percent. The public healthcare system provides basic services at subsidized cost, supplemented by a growing private hospital sector particularly concentrated in Colombo.

Tourism & Highlights

Sri Lanka holds eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Ancient City of Sigiriya — a 5th-century rock fortress — the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, the Old Town of Galle and its Dutch fortifications, and the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, recognized for its biodiversity. The Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy is among the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. Wildlife enthusiasts visit Yala National Park for leopard sightings and Udawalawe National Park for elephants. The southern coast towns of Mirissa and Unawatuna attract beach visitors, while Ella in the hill country is a base for hiking and scenic views.

History

Human settlement on the island dates back at least 30,000 years, with the Vijayan civilization traditionally cited as the foundation of Sinhalese culture around the 5th century BCE. The island, historically known as Ceylon, was a crossroads of Indian Ocean trade for millennia. Portuguese traders arrived in 1505, followed by the Dutch in the mid-17th century, and then the British, who consolidated control of the entire island by 1815 after defeating the Kandyan Kingdom. Ceylon achieved independence from Britain on 4 February 1948 and became a republic as Sri Lanka in 1972. A prolonged civil conflict between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) lasted from 1983 until 2009, when it ended with the military defeat of the LTTE. The country suffered devastating losses in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. In 2019, coordinated Easter Sunday bombings killed over 250 people. A severe economic crisis in 2022 led to widespread protests and a change in government.

Practical Information

Visa requirements for Sri Lanka vary by nationality. Many countries can obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before arrival, which is required for most visitors. You should check the official Sri Lanka immigration website for the most current requirements before traveling. Traffic drives on the left. The emergency number for police is 119, for ambulance 110, and for fire 111. The climate is tropical throughout the year, so light clothing is appropriate, though a layer is useful in the highland areas around Kandy and Ella where evenings can be cool. The best time to visit the western and southern coasts is from December to March, while the east coast is better suited to visits between April and September, following the respective dry seasons.
